Iron, England, 300-410AD This hammer head is of a type used by blacksmiths and other metal workers during the tempering process. Tempering involves heating and cooling metal in a controlled way in order to adjust how hard it is. Making an iron object like a scythe less hard and brittle through tempering allows it to bend slightly under pressure, reducing the chance of damage and prolonging its useful life. This hammer was found with the anvil that also appears as a 3D image within the burnt remains of the late-Roman church. Model by Historic England Geospatial Survey Team
