More model information‘Here lies the body of Angus, son of Lord Angus MacDonald of Islay’
This is the grave slab of Aongus Óg. The latin incription at the top of this slab probably commemorates Angus Óg MacDonald who was born on Islay and died around 1318.
Angus was head of the mighty Clan MacDonald and - like his ancestors - he styled himself Rí Innse Gall or ‘King of the Isles’. Robert the Bruce credited Angus and his violent Islesmen with sealing the Scots victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Look for the galley, which may symbolise Angus’s ability to raise a seagoing army.
