Fortress Koules or Aptera is located 12km east of Chania, close to Paleokastro, near the village of Kalami and the ruins of Ancient Aptera. The castle was built by the Turks after the Cretan Revolution of 1866, during a program for regaining control of Crete with a network of fortifications. It was built by the Turk Hussein Avni Pasha. and is a representative sample of fortress architecture of the 19th century.
The fort was built to control the Apokoronas valley, which was a passage to Chania. Along with the other castles built by the Turks in Apokoronas, the Turks controlled the port of Souda and supported the nearby fortress Intzedin.
