The Archaeological Site of Petres is located in the northeastern part of Northern Florina, at a short distance from Amyntaio on the western shore of Lake Petres.
The Hellenistic city of Petres was situated in antiquity on the borders of the ancient district of Eordaia, bordering Lynkestis, i.e., between Upper and Lower Macedonia. Built in a strategic position on the slopes of a trapezoidal hill 720 meters high, which overlooks Lake Petres and the fertile plain. The city was most likely founded in the mid-4th century BCE by Philip II to secure control over the northern and western borders of the Macedonian kingdom by uniting local tribal groups.
Workshops for pottery, sculpting, and metalworking operated within the city, as evidenced by parts of molds for relief vessels and idols found during excavations. With control over the Egnatia Road for the region, it became a significant trading center engaging with many cities in the Greek world.
