Ardipithecus ramidus lived approximately 4.4 million years ago in Ethiopia. They had a brain size similar to that of chimps, between 300 and 350cc. The species dates to several million years after the split between hominins and chimps (approximately 7.5-9.5mya). As such, it has a mix of ape-like and hominin characteristics. The parallel rows of teeth are similar to a chimp, while the foramen magnum (the opening at the base on the skull) is positioned under the skull, a characteristic of habitually bipedal hominins.
This cranium measures approximately 6” long x 5” high, with a width of 5”. This fossil has a cranial capacity of around 350cc.
