More model informationMedieval sarcophagus found beneath the floor of Ardrossan Parish Church on Castle Hill, Ardrossan. It contained part of skull and a fragment of leather.
One of the finest known examples of lowland Scottish medieval sculpture, the sarcophagus would have originally lain close to the altar of the church. The floriate cross on a stepped base, and sheathed sword that decorate the lid, suggest that the person buried must have been a Christian soldier. This part of the coffin also presents fleur-de-lys and trefoil ornamentation. The lower section of the sarcophagus is hollowed out in the shape of a man, with a raised “pillow” for the head.
