This model graphs the financial performance of movies in 2015 and 2016 by date of release and aggregate rating by Rotten Tomatoes.
Red: 2015 Movie - domestic box office
Orange: 2015 Movie - budget
Blue: 2016 Movie - domestic box office
Teal: 2016 Movie - budget
The abnormal number of movies which failed to make back their budget in the later months of 2016, lends credence to the theory that movie goers were “franchised-out” as all of the bombs were either sequels or based on existing IPs.
This graph also suggests that the large number of bombs was the result of escalating movie budgets for franchise movies. This in turn suggests that movie executives may have come to believe that it was virtually impossible for a franchise film to fail.
