The arming sword, knightly sword, or riding sword was a simple medieval one-handed sword with two edges that was popular in Europe throughout the medieval period.
Sometimes incorrectly known as a longsword or a broadsword, the arming sword was perhaps the most ubiquitous and versatile sidearm of its day, able to cut, thrust, and defend to great effect.
The style shown here would have been popular from the 12th to the 14th centuries, but arming swords had all sorts of different blade and hilt variations that adapted throughout the centuries, eventually evolving into the sidesword of the 16th century.
According to the Oakeshott Typology, this sword would be classified as roughly a Type XIIIb. This particular model is 45 inches (115 cm) in total length, and would weigh 2.4 pounds (just over 1 kg).
