白紺糸威鎧 兜／
紀州徳川家伝来／ 1746-1841（江戸時代後期）／ 兜を飾る龍は不動明王の化身･倶利伽羅（くりから）。 いかにも戦場で活躍しそうだが、江戸の武具は戦場ではなく儀礼の場で用いられた。 泰平の世となった江戸。武士たちのあいだでは武芸よりも秩序の維持のための儀礼が重視された。

Hermet of Armor with Dark Blue and White Lacing/ Introduced to the Kishū Tokugawa family / 1746-1841 / A dragon adorns the helmet. Although it gives a powerful impression, the armor of Edo was used not on the battlefield but for ceremonial occasions. Edo was an “age of peace” that came after a century of warfare. In the warrior households, rituals to maintain order were deemed more important than the military arts.
