In November 1936, the Commission on Armored Armaments of the Spanish Republic instructed the Colonel of the Spanish Army, Soviet military adviser Nikolai Alymov, to design an armored car similar to the Soviet FAI and BAI vehicles. The development of design documentation was carried out at the plant number 22 “Union naval de Levante” in Valencia. During the design, the armored car received the factory designation “TraDajo No. 35” (“Project No. 35”), or T-35 for short. Subsequently, according to the first letters of the name of the manufacturing plant, the car received the official designation UNL-35.
