The statue, made of Sterzing marble in 1774, was sculpted by Jacob Christoph Schletterer. Tradition emphasizes Artemisia’s incomparable love for her brother and husband as well as her great pain at his loss. According to legend, after his death she took his ashes mixed with water to be a living tomb for him and almost completed the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, in his eternal memory.
