Asphalt Volcano "Tar Lilly" Expulsion Feature

This volcanic asphalt expulsion feature was found during an exploration project where BOEM requested NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer to examine a rather odd looking sonar target that we thought to be a shipwreck. It was not. This was the first time one of these so called ‘Tar Lillies’ was ever oberved on the seafloor in the Gulf of America.
