The original home of the Atlanta Braves was Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, built 1965, demolished 1997. A parking lot now stands on the site, with an outline of the old stadium outlined in the asphalt. On April 8, 1974, Hank Aaron became baseball’s all-time career home run leader with his 715th home run. Aaron received death threats leading up to that night as it became evident that a Black ball player was about to break Babe Ruth’s long-standing home run record. The Beatles played here August 18, 1965, and Led Zeppelin played May 4, 1973. The site was previously occupied by Piedmont Hospital, founded in 1905 and demolished in 1957 with the building of the interstate highway through downtown Atlanta. To this day, many Atlantans say they were “born on third base”, the approximate location of the hospital.
