Attic Black-figure Neck Amphora (GV15)3D Model
c. 500 BC
Attic terracotta neck amphora decorated in black-figure technique, from the late black-figure period. Of the Dot-band class, near the Edinburgh Painter and therefore within the Leagros Group.
Side 1: Theseus, holding a sword, subdues the Marathonian Bull watched by two female onlookers. Side 2: Similar scene, but Theseus subdues the bull with a rope instead of a sword.
The scenes are among the earliest representations of Theseus subjugating the bull and the iconography is still experimental. The version showing a sword is rare, while the version using a rope became canonical. The images reflect the increasing popularity of Theseus at this period, perhaps consciously promoted as a rival to Herakles.
