Hot off the press!
Excavations in 2023 at Attingham Park revealed the footprint of a brick-built building interpreted as a hot garden house - a heated green house dating to the early 19th century.
This building has brick walls 2 feet/60cms thick, measuring just over 5 metres wide externally, with a c.1.7 metre wide lean-to building along its back wall. Its length is in excess of 14 metres.
This building forms part of a private ‘pleasure ground’ built for Thomas, the 2nd Lord Berwick. Elements, including an ornamental pool and ‘Neo-Classical’ summerhouse have been investigated through excavations by volunteers since 2018, working under the direction of Nigel Baker, Freelance Archaeologist and Viviana Caroli, Archaeologist for the National Trust.
