More model information“Lucy” is a classic example of the hominin species A. afarensis. The hominin lineage extends back to our last common ancestor with chimpanzees, approx. 6 million years ago, with Lucy having lived 3.2 million years ago. Lucy was discovered in 1974 in Hadar, Ethiopia by a team led by famed paleoanthropologist Don Johanson. The Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was playing on the radio the evening of the excavation and the researchers named their newly discovered specimen after the eponymous character.
