Statue of Austria, the personification of Austria, with spear and shield in her hand at the end of the Austria Fountain on the Freyung in Vienna’s 1st district. She is depicted with the imperial cloak and the imperial coat of arms on her shield. The Austria Fountain was designed in 1844 by the Munich sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler and cast in Munich by Ferdinand von Miller until 1846. During the Habsburg monarchy, the figure of Austria was regarded as the personification of the multi-ethnic state of Austria. She later became an allegory for the Austrian nation state. Her name corresponds to the Latin name for Austria.
