More model informationBuilt in Auckland in 1884, the steam tug Awhina served a long career in Albany, notably supporting the 1914 ANZAC fleet and saving the steamer Castlemoor from fire in 1928. After being stripped for scrap, the vessel was towed to Ledge Bay and burned on April 19, 1936, leaving its boiler and robust timber framing as a permanent fixture of the coastline. The site remains a rare example of 19th-century New Zealand shipbuilding, characterized by the reinforced construction required for heavy-duty maritime towing.
