Axis is the second cervical vertebra and is an atypical vertebra. The identification features of the second cervical vertebra are the presence of the dens (Odontoid process): Vertebral body of the axis fuses with the vertebral body of the first cervical vertebra and forms the odontoid process (dens). The spinous process of the Axis is bifid. Foramen transversia is present and passes vertebral artery The superior articular facet articulates with the inferior articular facet of the Atlas to form the lateral atlanto-axial joints The inferior articular facet articulates with the superior articular facet of the third cervical vertebra and forms the lateral intervertebral joints. The dens articulates anteriorly with the arch of the atlas and form the median atlanto-axial joint. Median atlanto-axial joint is the pivot variety of the joint.
