Badtz-maru, バッドばつ丸, the mischievous little penguin with spiky hair. He is one of the many characters produced by the Japanese company Sanrio and created by Hisato Inoue in 1993. Unlike the more popular Hello Kitty, he has an attitude and is one of the few characters that is marketed to all genders. He was born on April 1st. Badtz-maru attracts lots of attention as he walks his pet alligator, Pochi. Badtz-maru has dreams of greatness when he grows up, but for now he rolls his eyes at his humorous life in Gorgeoustown.

Hana-Maru, グッドはな丸, a white seal born at Kokuritsu Hospital, London. He can do ball acrobatics and likes gardening. In Japanese, he is called Good Hana-Maru, in contrast to Bad Badtz-Maru. A ‘hanamaru’ is a swirly and elaborate circle-mark, signifying not just a correct answer but a very good one. He’s a very good-natured seal who can be friends with anybody!

Despite how conflicting he and Badtz-Maru are personality-wise, they are the best of friends.
