More model informationBronze statues by San Diego-based sculptor Ruth Hayward commemorating the founding of Balboa Park.
In 1868, Ephraim Morse and Alonzo Horton convinced San Diego to set aside 1,400 acres for use as a public park, though the city had just 2,300 residents at the time. Several decades later, George Marston came up with plans for developing the park in its current form. Across the street is a fourth statue, depicting horticulturalist Kate Sessions who planted hundreds of trees in the park, many of which survive to this day.
