Ballyard Baptismal Font (TN037-046----)3D Model
An octagonal-shaped limestone font which stood on a four-clustered column has been moved to its present location where it stands up against the external face of the west wall of the Catholic Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in the village of Newport, Co. Tipperary. The font was taken from the medieval church (TN031-010001) & graveyard (TN031-010003) at Ballyard, Co. Tipperary. The bowl of the font has been filled in with cement. The rim of the bowl was chamfered on four sides only. The font was used as a stone basin which allowed the water to drain away during the ceremony of baptism, where water is poured onto a person who then becomes a follower of the Christian Church. Baptism comes from the Greek word baptizeis meaning to immerse or immersion in water. The eight-sided font represents the “eighth” day of Christ’s Resurrection symbolising the beginning of new life. St. Augustine wrote ‘The resurrection on the third day, which we call the Lord’s day, the day after the Sabbath, and therefore the eighth’.
