Ballyedmonduff Wedge-Tomb (DU025-045----)3D ModelNoAI
One of five prehistoric wedge-tombs in county Dublin, that was excavated in 1945 by Séan P. Ó Ríordáin and Professor Ruaidhrí de Valéra. Located on the south-facing slope of Two Rock Mountain with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Annotated ‘Giant’s Grave’ on the Ordnance Survey maps. Excavation revealed a ‘classic’ wedge tomb set within a horseshoe-shaped cairn. Centrally placed within the cairn the tomb consists of a gallery aligned east-west divided into three sections, an ante-chamber, a main chamber and an eastern end chamber. The cairn, defined by very closely spaced and well-matched kerbstones, has a straight façade at the west onto which the gallery opens. An upright stone flanking the northern side of the entrance is the only in situ façade orthostat. The excavators identified two small pits cut into the floor of the chamber at the eastern end, one of which was filled with cremated bone.
