Base E, Stonington Island, Antarctica (HSM.64)3D ModelNoAI
UKAHT’s Multi-storey Met Office
Captured in 2020 by UKAHT and BAS Magic team, this model shows the main hut, genny (generator) shed, pup pen, & radio mast of the most southern British Historic base. This model is part of UKAHT’s commitment to conserve and preserve historic sites in Antarctica.
This was the second British base built on site & underwent a series of building expansions to accomodate additional work & workers during the height of Antarctica’s Scientific Era.
Stonington Island was a site of meterology, geology, biology and survey mapping at several periods between 1946 & 1974. The island was formerly connected to the Antarctic mainland via a snow bridge which deteriorated from the early 70’s. This snow bridge allowed sled teams of scientists to explore uncharted areas and at its height housed over a dozen men and over 120 sled dogs!
