Basilisk fountain in the Vienna City Park. As a sign of solidarity and the jointly held European Football Championship 2008, the city of Basel donated one of its basilisk fountains to Vienna. The fountain was made according to an idea by Wilhelm Bubeck and commemorates the construction of a new water supply for the city of Basel. On the fountain bowl there is a basilisk as a shield holder of the Basel coat of arms. Water flows from its beak into the round basin. The outside is decorated with patterns, at the base of the fountain there is a small drinking bowl for animals. Forty-nine of the fountains were made and installed in Basel. Over time, fountains were given to other cities on certain occasions. So today these fountains can be found in Alsace, Shanghai, Vienna and Moscow.
