Influenced by artists such as T-Bone Walker and Lonnie Johnson, he began performing in local bars and clubs at the age of 15. In addition to his musical contributions, he became a fervent advocate for the blues, committed to promoting this musical genre that was so dear to him. In 1987, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1995.
