More model information

Some more macro photogrammetry! Although the model has been down-sized for Sketchfab it still contains a fair amount of detail (switch to Matcap mode to see geometry details). The needle piercing the insect has been left in place in the 3D model in order to give viewers an idea of scale.

Onthophagus elegans (Klug, 1832) is a species of scarab native to Madagascar. This particular sample is from in the Coleoptera collection of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.

The model was built using pictures from the ZooSphere Project. A big thanks to Joachim Willers and Martin Pluta for sharing these excellent focus-stacked macro images. Credit also goes to Sketchfab user Thomas Flynn for the original idea of using the ZooSphere images to make 3D models - take a look at his exceptional work here!
