Ben Rhydding

The exact origin of this stone remains unknown. It was discovered in 2007, discarded on the site of a recently demolished school in the Ben Rhydding area of Ilkley. It is thought the stone may have come from a neighbouring garden, though this is speculative.

Following its discovery, the stone was moved to the Manor House Museum in Ilkley and became part of Bradford Metropolitan Council’s collections. For many years, it was stored on the cart shown here, and resided beneath a table in one of the museum’s teaching rooms.

Keith Boughey recorded the carving in his regional archive as IAG331a, describing:

“The rock carries a clear cup and lipped ring set in a deep recess with a partial outer lip, echoed by a broad groove surrounding this on one side, leading to another smaller cup and lipped ring set in a similar recess.”
