More model informationThe Benteng Iskandar Muda (MAHS-IDN-ACH-ABS-MRY-S-002-F-0001) is a large stone fortification built on the Aceh coast along the western bank of the Krueng Raya river. The site is now often submerged at high tide as the ground level has a lower elevation than that of the river enbankment. The structure was seriously damaged during the 2004 tsunami being partially reconstructed. The fortification is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636) in defense of the Sultanate’s port against European incursions.
