Two carvings are on the lid: the letters “MOD” and a house mark or possibly a monogram. The letters “MOD” have been interpreted as a woman’s initials, for example, Maria OlofsDotter. The Vasa material contains many similar initials, but all the others end with an “S”, which then represents “Son” at the end—for example, “APS”: Anders PeterSon.
