Modello for the Fountain of the Four Rivers.
This prepatory study for the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in Rome’s Piazza Navona was completed around 1650 by Bernini and his workshop.
The model is made of wood, slate, terracotta, and plaster, with traces of gilding and color.
Artists often submitted modelli to design competitions, in addition to drawings, in the hopes of winning prestigious commissions.
The Fountain of the Four Rivers is so-called because of the four lounging river gods, each of whom represents one of the great rivers of the world: the Danube, the Nile, the Rio de la Plata, and the Ganges.
