Bielsk Podlaski – Góra Zamkowa (Łysa Górka) and the castle Between the Biała River and the Lubka River, there is a medieval stronghold, locally called “Łysa Górka” or “Castle Mountain”. This is the site of an original defensive stronghold, which dates back to the 12th century. This is an artificial mound, 7 m high, There was a stronghold with a wooden and earth structure. The first mention of it comes from 1253. In the 1420s, these lands were taken over by Lithuania. Lithuanian rulers strengthened the stronghold, which became part of the border defense system. In the 2’nd half of the 14th century it was invaded by the Teutonic Knights. In 1408, Jogaila handed the town over to Vytautas. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the role of Bielsko increased as a city located at the meeting point of the routes leading to Vilnius from Krakow and then to Warsaw. In 1564 castle burned down due to a lightning strike.
