Binturongs (NHMW-Zoo-MAMM ST525)3D Model
3D scan of the mount of the Asian binturongs, or bearcats (Arctictis binturong). Binturongs are very unusual animals. They are part of the Viverridae, which makes them cat-like animals. In contrast to cats that have a digitigrade locomotion – meaning walking on the toes – binturongs are plantigrade. This means, they use the entire soles of their feet when walking.
The two specimens of the NHM Vienna lived at the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna and were mounted in 1904 and 1905.
The binturongs are Number 94 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 38 of the NHM Vienna.
