Many bipolar cells are specialized sensory neurons for the transmission of sense. They are part of the sensory pathways for smell, sight, taste, hearing, touch, balance and proprioception. In the retina, bipolar cells exist between photoreceptors (rod cells and cone cells) and ganglion cells. They transmit signals from the photoreceptors to the ganglion cells.
