Numerous, mostly private initiatives, pursued the goal of erecting Bismarck towers from the founding of the German Reich in 1871. In 1885, Otto von Bismarck celebrated his 70th birthday. After his dismissal as Reich Chancellor in 1890, an unprecedented veneration of Bismarck began in the German Empire, which intensified after the death of the former chancellor in 1898.
The first tower in honor of Bismarck was planned from 1863 and completed in 1869. A private builder erected it in Ober Johnsdorf in Lower Silesia. Until 1898, other towers were erected sporadically, which were later designated as Bismarck towers; however, it is not proven that these were dedicated to Bismarck from the beginning.
Of the original approximately 240 Bismarck towers and columns, 173 structures still stand on the present territories of Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, Austria, Cameroon, Tanzania and Chile.
