More model informationThe black ash tree holds high cultural and spiritual significance to the Abenaki peoples. It is part of the Abenaki creation story and has been used for hundreds of years to make both utilitarian and fancy black ash baskets. It is currently under threat by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an invasive beetle. With infestation the EAB has a 100% mortality rate. It was first seen in Vermont in 2018. Efforts are being made to treat some trees and to process black ash splints for future generations. The black ash tree has an affinity for water which creates growth rings that separate well from the tree to make splints. Because of its slow and even growth pattern the splints are both pliable and strong, an ideal material for basket making. M4500-DS
