South-East Dorset black-burnished ware bowl 848/1989/1/1 This bowl was excavated from a Roman cremation burial on a road leading from the fortress at Exeter. The shape is called a ‘pedestalled’ bowl and the simple decoration around the rim is similar to Iron Age pottery found in Devon.

Black-burnished ware bowl Black-burnished ware is the most common type of Roman pottery found in Exeter, although most finds are of small fragments of pottery. This bowl is one of the most complete found from the city.
