This is one of four carved boulders found within private woodland in the Cottingley area of Bradford.
It’s the most easterly of the cluster, measuring approximately 2.5 x 2m and slopes down to the south. The motifs are found on the southerly sloping face and consist of a cup surrounded by a large oval and two possible inner curving grooves. A natural fault has also been enhanced creating a groove leading from the cup out to the east. First recorded in 1976 it was one of five carvings mentioned in Historic England scheduling (only 4 may exist): https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1018817
Not recorded in Boughey & Vickerman’s 2003 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’, but was later added to Keith Boughey’s ongoing regional archive as ref IAG 4d.
It’s outside the area covered by the CSI: Rombalds Moor Project and therefore doesn’t have an ERA record.
Model (just showing carving) created from 2 stereo pairs taken with a calibrated 5mp Nikon Coolpix 5400 in Augus 2006.
