Bodiam 100: Trench 1

Trench excavated in Freren Mead in July - August 2024 to the south of the River Rother as part of Bodiam100 - a partnership project with National Trust, Archaeology South-East and the Institute of Archaeology, London.

Evidence for the 20th century Guinness hop garden was revealed along with drainage channels and other land management features. The overview image shows the full extent of the trench (east to the top), with slots and pits excavated to reveal the hop garden infrastructure and the substantial drainage channel running across the area.
