Bone ship model (SOTLS : 1982.1221) Artec Eva3D ModelNoAI
The model was made by prisoners of war during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars.
At this time, no prisoners were held in Southampton, but many prisoners of war were held in other local sites, including on board old ships moored in Portsmouth Harbour. Soldiers and sailors were held in Winchester and officers were on parole billeted at inns and with private individuals around the county, including in Alresford, Petersfield and Odiham. Spanish and French prisoners were held in Portchester Castle.
The prisoners would make souvenirs and toys from bone, leftovers from the prisoners’ dinner, including ship models.
The model ship has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.
