Bony fish (OUMNH PAL-J.003001)3D Model
Lyme Regis, Dorset, England. Lower Jurassic (~200 million years old).
Dapedium punctatum is an extinct ray-finned fish that roamed the Tethys Sea, situated between two ancient continents – Gondwana and Laurasia. This almost complete fossil belonged to Elizabeth Philpot and is an excellent example of her fossil presentation style. The fish is set within plaster and contained inside a polished wooden frame, allowing the fossil to be transported for further study.
Swiss palaeontologist, Louis Agassiz, took great interest in Elizabeth’s collection, visiting her and Mary Anning to study their fossils and remarking in the 1930s that this specimen was “the most beautiful example of fossil fish I have ever seen”.
