More model informationLyme Regis, Dorset, England. Lower Jurassic (~200 million years old).
Fish fossils were commonly found by Mary Anning in Lyme Regis during the Victorian era. This tail from Elizabeth Philpot’s collection belonged to Caturus heterurus and preserves excellent scale detail.
Elizabeth and Mary both collected and studied numerous fish species and provided fossils for Swiss palaeontologist Louis Agassiz to study when he visited the town. Louis was so impressed by the knowledge the two women had of fossil fish that he named a species after Elizabeth, Eugnathus philpotae.
