The Győr Boatman Monument, known in Hungarian as Csónakos fiú, is a bronze sculpture by Hungarian sculptor Iván Paulikovics. It was created in 1997 and is located on Baross Gábor utca in the old town. The work was originally titled “Nosztalgia egy letűnt kor után” – “Nostalgia for a bygone era.”
The figure shows a young man in a boat pushing off with an oar. It is reminiscent of Győr’s long history as a city of rivers, where the Danube, Raab, and Rábca meet. It is often mistakenly associated with the floods of 1954, but in fact it symbolizes the city’s close relationship with water and shipping. Today, the “Boat Boy” is considered one of Győr’s most famous landmarks and a popular photo motif in the old town.
