The Orangutan of Borneo is a great ape native to the dense tropical forests of Borneo. It is one of the closest living relatives to humans and is known for its intelligence, long reddish-brown hair, and distinctive facial features. The species was first scientifically described by the Italian naturalist Odoardo Beccari in the 19th century, following his explorations of Borneo’s rainforests. Bornean orangutans are primarily arboreal, spending most of their lives in trees, where they build nests for sleeping and travel through the canopy in search of fruits, leaves, and insects. Pongo pygmaeus is critically endangered due to habitat loss, deforestation, and hunting. Conservation efforts focus on protecting forests, rescuing and rehabilitating individuals, and educating local communities.
