The bow drill was used by clock and watch makers carrying out fine work, as it allows greater control than a mechanical drill.

The drill is operated by the bow, the cord being turned around the drill handle and alternate revolution in opposite directions is given by moving the bow backward and forward. The bow is made of wood and the cord is made of gut, horsehair, or human hair.
