This simple, hefty bowl was inspired by an iconic moment in Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, (1837). In this dramatic scene, the ravenous orphan Oliver, raises his bowl to the workhouse master with his famous plea, “Please sir, I want some more”.
Dr Iskandar often titles or describes his vessels with references drawn from literary prose or poetry. This ‘begging bowl’ pays tribute to Oliver’s moment of courage and audacity and well-known humiliation as he is severely beaten for his request. This basic bowl has a marvellous presence - exuding dignity, composure and an air of imperturbability.
Made from raku clay, the bowl’s exterior has a grainy coarseness while its interior is glazed smooth. The bowl’s robust, resolute quality is amplified by thick walls and a sturdy foot-ring that stands out with its matt black glaze. Bands of mild colour encircle its upper body, softening the austerity of the bowl.
