This boulder sits on private farmland within the scheduled area of Bracken Heads, Langleydale Common, ESE of Eggleston, County Durham.
If carved, this appears to be a new find by the NADRAP team during their 2005 surveys. The team recorded ‘Brackenheads N03’ on ERA and described:
‘Tall stone in a cairnfield with other marked rocks nearby. The very straight edge to the rock may have resulted from quarrying. There is a possibility that formation may have been due to natural erosion - but position in cairnfield supports the rock art association.’
The case for natural formation looks a strong one.
