“Brain coral is a common name given to corals in the family Mussidae, so called due to their generally spheroid shape and grooved surface which resembles a brain. Each head of coral is formed by a colony of genetically identical polyps which secrete a hard skeleton of calcium carbonate; this makes them important coral reef builders like other stony corals in the order Scleractinia.” - Wikipedia
This brain coral was located on the southern side of the coral garden known as Siete Pecados off the coast of Coron, Philippines. The pictures (84) were taken with a GoPro Hero 3+ with 12 megapixel/wide settings and were not corrected for their barrel/fisheye distortion. Afterwards the photos were resized using Image Resizer.
The sparse/dense clouds were created using VisualSFM, and imported into Meshlab where the dense cloud was cleaned and a Poisson mesh was generated, followed by texture mapping.
