The breechlocking mechanism includes the breech block (e.g., Welin type) and the mechanism for inserting and withdrawing the block.

Several methods exist for closing the breech. In one, the breech block slides on a tray. For instance, the Stockett continuous-motion breech mechanism uses a tray-supported breech block that performs all motions—rotation, translation, and swinging—with a single crank.

The breechblock locking device secures the breechblock in its closed position, preventing rotation during firing.
