Bristol High Cross, Berkeley Square, Clifton
The medieval High Cross is first mentioned in 1247. It was rebuilt in 1373 when Bristol became a City and County. It stood at the crossroads of High St, Corn St, Wine St, and Broad St. In 1733, it was moved to College Green, then sold in 1763 to Stourhead House in Wilts, where it can still be seen.
In 1851, a replica was re-erected in College Green, then removed in 1950 following construction of the Council House and destruction of the green. It suffered years of neglect stored in a council yard until the stones were puchased from the council for £50. Following an appeal by the Civic Society, £300 was raised to partly restore it. The reworked upper tier was installed in Berkeley Square and unveiled in a civic ceremony on 5 Oct 1956. It is this fragment that features in this model.
